Employee motivation is not always the easiest job to do, but it does pay off for your business, your customers and the employee. In this article i will explain the importance of motivation for you and your employee.

The Right Employee Motivation

Recognition is ranked the number one motivating factor when it comes to employee motivation in the workplace.

If you want to maintain motivated employees, and encourage others to do better, recognizing them publicly may save yourself the time and money of having to find and re-train new staff.

One of the best techniques to build and maintain employee motivation is to make it a practice to have an event or period end staff meeting, followed by a employee, & maybe spouse dinner, staff recognition awards and a closing party. This will build and maintain employee motivation though ongoing sincere recognition and deserving reward.

You may find it hard to believe, but recognition is the most powerful employee motivator of all. Research has shown that there is a stronger need in society today for recognition than there is for sex and money. Now, that says something about employee motivation.

Let’s think about it.

We could provide employee motivation through a bonus in the form of money at the end of a period. Sure they’ll be happy and thankful. They may even perform better, but what are their expectations at the end of the next period? Right; more money. External employee motivation is temporary – it is never lasting.

Money is an external employee motivator and it is never lasting. It’s an incentive that once acquired, leads to expectations for more, bigger or better.

But if you have a bad period will they care? They’ll want a bonus at least equal to what they got last year, but preferably more, not less.

A survey of thousands of workers around the world compared rankings by supervisors and employees on employee motivating factors. The typical supervisory group ranked the factors in the following order:

1. High wages

2. Job security

3. Promotion in the organization

4. Good working conditions

5. Interesting work

6. Personal loyalty of supervisor

7. Tactful discipline

8. Full appreciation of work done

9. Help on personal problems

10. Feeling of being in on things

However, when employees were given the same exercise and asked what affects their morale and employee motivation the most, their answers followed this pattern;

1. Full appreciation of work done

2. Feeling of being in on things

3. Help on personal problems

4. Job security

5. High wages

6. Interesting work

7. Promotion in the organization

8. Personal Loyalty of supervisor

9. Good working conditions

10. Tactful discipline

Note that the top three employee motivating factors marked by the employees are the last three felt to be important for them by their supervisors.

Do you think it would be any different in your business?

So it is fair to say that money, over and above wages, is not a main motivating factor, but full appreciation of work done is. This is recognition: the number one employee motivating factor in building and maintaining a motivated employee.

Why is it so important?

When someone gives you a compliment or recognizes you for doing something, how do you feel? Imagine, for a moment, being complimented by all your family, friends, staff and customers all day, every day.

What would it do to your self-esteem your self confidence and your self respect? Without it going to your head, how do you think you would perform? Would you be outstanding or what? Is this not the basis of employee motivation?

Team motivation through recognition is positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement of actions gets those actions repeated. Recognition and praise reinforces our beliefs about ourselves and helps make us think we are better than we thought we were. That is what employee motivation is all about.

Employee motivation is positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcements is what builds our self-esteem. Our self-esteem is the way we see and feel about ourselves either internally, through our own beliefs, or externally through what we accept as the beliefs of others.

If we feel good about ourselves and we believe others feel good about us, we perform better than we would when we see the opposite side of the coin. Employee motivation starts from within.

People perform in a manner that is consistent with how they see themselves conceptually. So, the key is to help people build their self-esteem. That is the foundation of employee motivation.

You can not teach a team motivation if you are not highly motivated yourself. Here are some tips and tricks on how to motivate yourself and stay motivated.

Importance Of Motivation

Importance Of Motivation Photo by h.koppdelaney via Flickr

A teacher once said that what counts most in life are the lessons learned by heart. The challenge lies on the importance of motivation to encourage students to ‘learn’ from the trivial and sometimes disconnected facts found in books.

These principles and proven strategies are very effective not just in motivating students, but your sales force, as well.

1. Link Learning to Life.

The importance of motivation is emphasized by relating a lesson to a real life situation. When such an approach is used, you may find that the majority of participants will have more than the average retention rate in conveying the important concepts of the meeting.

By aligning lessons with true-to-life events, you can achieve success in helping your salespeople appreciate shared principles and strategies better than by simply flooding them with antiquated facts.

2. Exercise Positive Reinforcement.

To motivate participation, rewards and recognitions should be handed out to those who actively participate, or those who volunteer to share their best practices. On the other hand, always make sure that the less active get their share, as well, especially if there are significant improvements on their own.

You’ll find your sales force more attentive and competitive, not to mention better performing. The importance of motivation is accentuated by using positive reinforcement to get positive results.

3. Engage Your Staff in Discussions.

Make it a point to give everyone in the meeting a chance to join major and minor discussions. Everyone will feel a sense of purpose; therefore, motivating them to do better in both in the field and in the conference room because they felt that they belong, that they were part of something great. The importance of motivation is displayed by getting your staff involved in every opportunity possible to boost confidence.

4. Practice Interactive Activities.

Holding an active discussion – a debate, even – often proves essential for staff motivation. They exchange intelligent ideas that are unusual in common day-to-day discussions.

They become active participants in charge of their own growth. They exert their best efforts to express themselves, taking what they absorb to a much higher level.

The importance of motivation allows deeper understanding and realization of the lessons acquired in school, in the conference room, in the field, and in life, in general. Here, it is reflected that motivation is the springboard of learning.

If you want to run a successful business then team motivation is one of the most important tasks. In this article i will reveal the secret on how to motivate a team in just 30 minutes.

Internal Motivation Of Team Members

Internal Motivation Of Team Members Photo by h.koppdelaney via Flickr

A) Ask the group to get into teams of three. the teams of three spend 5-10 minutes discussing what motivates them to greatness. Ask them to share team motivation that is internal – how they started their business?

what keeps them going when challenges arise? what are some challenges they have overcome? etc.. Ask the groups to briefly share what they spoke about.

B) Then speak about overcoming challenges that appear impossible although with assistance and motivation from a network (the group that is here with you today) we can take our level of expertise and amplify it – with help. Pride causes us to not ask for help when needed.

We feel that we built this thing (business etc..) we can do it alone, and often time our motivation for greatness causes blind spots that we are not aware of. Although greatness comes to those who admit that they need help and learned from the mistakes and successes of others. Spend about 10 minutes speaking about challenge, motivation, and helping others.

C) Have enough Rope Handcuffs available for one for each participant. Ask the teams of three to connect themselves. For a team of three you are just adding one person to one of the participants ropes.

Explain that this team building initiative takes motivation to work through what seems impossible problems. The team building activity is not complete until all the groups are separate. (by adding that all groups must be successful leaves a processing time at the end of helping others reach success).

D) if you notice teams are struggling – I generally walk into the crowd with a rope on my own wrists and start illustrating the solution VERY FAST to random teams. (this concept of teaching a confusing concept fast – develops a teachable moment of how as leaders we feel we are helping, when those whom we are helping have no idea of what we are speaking about)

F) after about 15 minutes tell teams that are still attached to stay attached while you process the time together.

G) Possible processing questions;

What was the goal? Was the goal achieved? why or why not? Where did team find motivation?Where did individuals find motivation? Where was the breakthrough moment? When the fun stopped describe your thoughts? How, as a business person, do you solve challenging problems?

Did you accept help when it was offered? Did you offer help? What does helping others have to do with motivation? When can motivation block you from achieving success? What can we learn from this?

H) show them how to free themselves.

I) explain that team building motivation is a great concept – helping others to achieve and find their motivation creates cultures that are internally motivated and more profitable.

Team building and team motivation is usually accomplished with a series of team forming exercises and team motivation techniques.

Employee Motivation

Employee Motivation Photo by h.koppdelaney via Flickr

Some Activities

·Icebreakers – Activities designed for the members of a team to get to know each other through fun and informative mini activities.

·Trust Exercises – Team members must rely on each other for support and direction. Common examples are blindfolded trust walks and trust falls.

·Creative Problem Solving – Team members are given a problem to solve in a specific amount of time.

These problems generally do not relate to situations that would typically find in the work place. Building a raft, starting a fire, or completing an obstacle course are common examples of problem solving exercises.

· Adaptability – The team sets out to complete their task with one set of parameters and then in the middle of the task the organizer adds other factors to which the team must adapt themselves.

Goals of Team building
·Improved communication between team members
·Increased level of comfort within the team
·Increased level of trust within the team
·Increased level of productivity within the team
·Overall increase in motivation
·Identifying and utilizing the strengths of each team member
·Improvement in collaboration skills

If a company elects to spend an entire day in this activity, the time will not be wasted. Many employees report feeling rejuvenated after a day spent doing it.

Depending on the type of motivation techniques and exercises, the day might be organized within the office or adjacent grounds, or it may take place at a specially designed retreat that caters to the needs of business-based activities that involve working in a team.

At a retreat, a typical day might go as follows:

1) The members of the team report to the site and sign in.
2) They are briefed on safety and other considerations specific to the site.
3) They are guided through a series of ice breaking and trust exercises.
4) They are given the details of the task they have to accomplish as a team.
5) They complete their task.
6) They participate in a debriefing session following the completion of the activity to recognize their overall strengths and weaknesses as team. As one can imagine, it is this debriefing session that puts all the activities of the day in a useful context.

Overall, Team Building can be a very effective exercise for improving relations and productivity in the workplace.

Many of the top managers confess that team motivation is a kind of an art. You have to have a talent or need to learn the proper motivation skills.

Motivation TechniquesThey find it easy to present and supply sales team training on selling skills, but what about motivation techniques. To motivate a sales person you need to offer a regular boost of self motivation. It can take time to constantly find new and refreshing ideas, and give different angles and perspectives on how to get into the most effective selling state.

Secrets of motivating offered here will give you a sales training and motivation program for your sales team using a minimum amount of time. It uses the free resources available on the Internet and it won’t cost you a penny. It also gets your team involved from the start and asks them to contribute as the idea grows in size and benefits.

How it worked for my sales teams

The objective is to build a list of free online sales training and motivation resources available on the Internet and use them in an ongoing motivation program. You probably have some links saved in your favourites list. Your sales team will have some as well.

As a starting point imagine if you had a list of links to all those sales and motivation websites you already know about, all in one easy to access place. This is how I started when looking at how to motivate employees in my sales teams. Then we added all the other sites we came across that had effective sales training or good motivation techniques.

How to put these motivation technique sinto action today

Here’s how to put this sales team training into action with your sales teams. First, build the list of good quality links to websites. Present the idea of building an Internet based training and motivation resource to your sales team. Show them a few examples of websites that you use for sales training and information.

Ask them to submit their own. Get them to go through their favourites list on their PC’s, log into their search history, and ask them to click around the Internet to find new and interesting websites. Get them involved, show them the benefits, and ask for their feedback.

Decide where to keep the list of links

Decide upon the best place to keep your list of sales and motivation websites. You want somewhere that is easy to access, will be remembered, and is accessible by all the sales team. It must also be somewhere that the information and new links can be added regularly. If your organisation has a company intranet then that may be a good place to start building your sales training resource. Shared drives and folders are another good place to park the list of links. You might think of other ideas such as sending it out in a company newsletter, or simply emailing the list to your sales team on a regular basis.

Add some information to each link

To make this list of sales team training and motivation links effective, add a brief description to each link. It only needs a few comments to indicate if the link is about motivation techniques, sales training, or product and industry knowledge. Ask your team to add these comments when they submit a new link to be added to the list. You could take this further and add a rating system from 1 to 5 on how effective and useful they think the website is.

Keep the list updated

Keep the list updated and over time you will build an enormous resource of sales training and motivation techniques. The more comprehensive the descriptions and comments about the website are the more effective and useful your list will be.

Think what could happen if you expand and develop the use of this free resource. What if you included more people within your organisation and expanded the topics covered by this list of websites. As long as the list is separated into categories for each topic, and perhaps even a contents page written, it will remain useful and effective.

Add a motivation training schedule

Once we brought all these great website links together we set certain times of the week to make the best use of these motivation techniques. Motivation training works best in short bursts with specific objectives. There a certain times of the week when a quick burst of motivation, a new sales training idea, or examples of proven marketing techniques, are most effective.

Monday morning after a weekend break 15 minutes on a good website, with short sharp self motivation techniques, can get you into a selling state. Friday morning we have found clicking on websites with time management, or prospecting tips, which can be used the following week, can have a great effect.

When you have a tough day facing difficult objections and can’t close sales, then a sales training site is a good way to finish the day. These are examples of how we use these sales team training motivation techniques. You can adapt them, develop them, and find how to motivate your employees using a list of good Internet links. The sales team have bought into the idea because they helped to build the list.

A lot of managers do not posses the right skills for team motivation. Motivating a sales team is harder than you think.

Secrets Of MotivatingMany managers tell me that some of their reps are already motivated and don’t need their help in that area (usually the Top 20%), but that the majority seem to need constant motivating, mentoring, counseling, or out right babysitting. Sound familiar?

When asked what to do, I tell them there is only so much they can do because true motivation comes from within — in other words, each member of their team is already motivated. There are, however, 5 things you can do to get the most out of your sales team and keep motivation and morale high. Here’s what they are –

#1) Make your monthly revenue goal, and each rep’s part of that goal, crystal clear. I’m sure you have a monthly revenue goal, but does each member of your sales team know what their specific part of that goal is? (Hint — it’s not all equal).

Recognize that some reps will produce much more of the overall goal than others, but also make sure each one is clear on what their part of that overall goal is.

#2) Individualize the bonuses or prizes. The problem with most bonus programs is that as soon as they are released, over one-half of the sales team knows they can’t win so they are more discouraged than encouraged to produce. Customize each rep’s bonus based on their individual production goal. This ensures every body has a chance to win and thus will be motivated.

#3) Get out of your office and close some deals. Most managers are way too busy in meetings, or reporting, or just plain hiding out to be really effective. Remember one thing — as the manager, you are the leader.

And leaders lead by example. Want to motivate your team, make your numbers, and create real value for yourself? Go onto the floor and close business for some of your sales reps and help them make their revenue goals. This is the most important thing you can do not only for your bottom line, but for your team’s motivation as well.

#4) Invest $100 in a couple of trophies. The best money you’ll ever spend — make one a "Weekly most improved" or "Best effort" and hand it out each Monday morning. Each winner gets to keep it on their desk that week.

The other trophy can be either "Most deals," or "Most new clients" or whatever other category everyone has a chance to win (as long as it is revenue related). Again, hand it out in your Monday morning sales meeting, and each week the winner gets to keep it on their desk. Rule #1 in motivating: recognition among peers is almost always more important than money.

#5) Have some fun! Go to a toy store and buy one of those beanbag tosses, and after lunch on Friday make some teams and have some fun playing as a team. Tack on $50 for good measure and watch the competition and fun build your team and dissolve stress. This works – try it!

So there you have it. Inexpensive, proven techniques to build morale, motivate and make more money.

For boosting employee motivation invest in and give each member of your team a copy of my new CD series , "The Secrets of the Top 20% – How to Double Your Income Selling over the Phone." That alone will turn some of your sales reps into Top 20% producers and then they will forever be motivated from within — the ultimate motivation!

Good employee motivation is essential for any successful business. But unfortunately not all leaders posses the right motivation skills.

Boosting Employee MotivationThe challenge today is that a lot of managers want to know how to motivate their employees. A better question however, is "How do I create a climate that is motivational for my employees?" Here are five simple tips that help to create an inspiring work culture and increase employee motivation.

Tips For Team Motivation

Managers have to understand that their mood weighs far more than anyone else’s on the team. When an employee is in a bad mood most of the team will dismiss it. When the manager is in a bad mood everybody notices.

When managers arrive at work frustrated, stressed, and in a stormy mood, it will erode employee motivation. So when you come to work, make a decision before you open that door to arrive in good spirits, full of optimism, and ready to go.

2. Make sure people know what you expect

Ambiguity can stifle team motivation. When employees know exactly where you are going as a team, and when they know exactly what is expected of them, they will require less direction and prodding from you. Make sure your staff is clear about expectations, and are constantly reminded of the vision and goals of the company.

3. Provide regular feedback

People want to know how they are doing. It is important for a manager to provide ongoing feedback for their staff. This covers both positive feedback, and constructive criticism. Some managers only give feedback when something is wrong. This will lead to a staff that wonders when and if they are doing anything right.

Other managers only give out positive feedback which is great, but if you never offer any constructive feedback for their improvement they will begin to distrust you. Employee motivation is fueled in part by knowing where we are and where we have to go. Give regular feedback.

4. Help people grow

Everybody wants to grow and develop. In today’s world employees know they have to become more and more valuable in order to stay competitive. In fact one of the elements people most want from their job is a chance to grow and develop. If you can find ways to provide ongoing development for your people it will help boost their motivation. It does not have to be big, but they have to see tangible efforts being made to help them grow.

5. Give people choice

An integral part of intrinsic motivation is autonomy. When people feel autonomous, they feel they are in control of their own destinies. In a work setting this is demonstrated when people have choice in how to do their job. When you micromanage an employee they feel like they have very little choice. This kills employee motivation because they feel more like a prisoner than a trusted part of the team.

Employee motivation has many facets but the manager who learns to apply some of these principles can go a long way in creating a motivating work environment. Remember, it’s not so much how you motivate a person, as it is how you create a motivational environment where your employees will motivate themselves.

How many managers or employers are expressive enough to do these little things that make a difference?

Many companies have innovate ideas to keep loyal employees on their payrolls- Seasonal and annual gifts during festive season, mention in the corporate news letter on achieving targets, even taking them out for movies for great team building! The equations have changed in today’s world. Independent thinkers are capable of putting in their papers for more lucrative landmarks in their personal careers. Office politics can get vicious and boring after a time. Some employees stay motivated only till the time their friends remain or the pretty operator in the lobby. Employers need not look beyond their own cabins to motivate their team. In some offices abroad, office romances are being encouraged to retain staff and keep them working overtime. Now that is a radical way, but it has worked for some!

Young leaders have inspired their old employees to work for them. A dynamic leader, a good communicator and providing challenges have helped many employers to keep a team stimulated at work. In the last 75 years, Reliance Industries has remained motivated despite the demise of the patriarch Dhirubhai Ambani. Gone are the days when a hire and fire policy worked.
